Don’t Sell Yourself Short

By Staff Writer Published on November 18, 2016

In a competitive global economy, it’s easy to sell yourself short. Without an education, you may feel you are falling behind the competition for jobs, and possibly finding yourself with a lower standard of living. However, there are a few ways to realize a more promising future for yourself and your family, and going back to school is one of them.

It’s becoming increasingly common for people in the United States to go back to college after taking a few years off. In 2009, over 40 percent of college students were over the age of 25, and that number is anticipated to increase to 43 percent by 2020.

How settling for less may impact your life

There may be nothing worse than feeling like you are settling in life. This mindset can have a large impact on overall mental and emotional health. Entrepreneur contributor Peter Voogd offers this list of reasons why selling yourself short is detrimental:

1. Regret

Settling now, by not getting an education, or not following your career aspirations, could result in feelings of regret later in life. Regret causes people to only dwell on their failures and missed opportunities, rather than notice the positive things.

2. Lack of Creativity

Those who feel they’ve settled often have diminished creativity because they are trying to live up to set expectations. Their imagination and innovation is stifled when they don’t feel they can truly be themselves.

3. Fewer Experiences

If you feel you’ve settled now, it’s likely you will expect less of yourself in the future. You may decide not to try new things, like interviewing for that dream job, simply because you feel you can’t.

4. Strained Relationships

Feeling bad about ourselves can result in personal frustrations that often affect those closest to us: family and friends. Those who’ve settled with less than they are capable of often complain about their circumstances, and that can put strain on relationships.

How going back to school may enrich your life

The good news is that you don’t have to settle! If you feel that a lack of education is keeping you from achieving your career or personal goals, it isn’t too late to go back to school. Doing so may enrich your life by helping you to:

1. Be Qualified

Furthering your education may give you a leg-up in your desired career field. It may also expose you to other areas of study while you specialize in one specific area.

2. Earn More Money

In today’s marketplace, professional opportunities may be limited for those without a college degree or certification. It may also be easier for someone with a college degree to find a well-paying job.1

3. Learn from Experts

College courses give you the opportunity to learn from professionals who are highly skilled in their area of interest. This firsthand knowledge is a great resource and learning tool for students of any age.

4. Start a Tradition

By going back to school, students have the chance to start a new tradition for their families. According to a study from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, 85 percent of 18- to 24-year-olds who attend college came from a household where at least one person had a bachelor’s degree.
