Top 5 Things to Do in San Marcos

By Published on May 31, 2018

Whether you’re finishing up a college degree, looking to apply, or you’ve found a job and settled into a good routine, you need activities to help you unwind. Luckily, San Marcos has tons of great things to do. From hiking to wine tasting—and of course, the ocean—there’s no shortage of great opportunities waiting for you to find them.

Double Peak Park

This park is one of the most popular attractions in San Marcos, and for good reason. Hiking up to Double Peak gives you a stunning panoramic view of the entire San Diego County. It’s the highest peak in the entire county and boasts tons of other trails, a telescope, playground, and picnic areas. So if you’re looking for a place to take the family, or a great first-date spot, Double Peak Park needs to make your list.

Golfing

This list wouldn’t be complete without some mention of golf. Southern California is a golf haven, with its moderate year-round temperature and fairly cooperative weather.

It’s a great place to learn the sport as well. And since most business meetings are held on the golf course, it’s an important skill to learn, right?

Kidding aside, golf is a great way to get outside and enjoy the brilliant California weather. The Twin Oaks Golf Course is known for being a great place to get lessons at a reasonable price point. For a college student or a business professional just starting out, the $99 price tag for their introductory golf lessons feels very fair.

Rip Current Brewing

If craft beer and breweries are your thing, then you’ll want to make sure to visit Rip Current Brewing. It’s rated highly on TripAdvisor as a go-to place for beer tasting, with most visitors rating it as “excellent.”

Like most breweries, Rip Current has a knowledgeable staff on hand to help you find the perfect beer for a date or dinner party. Plus, you get free samples of different beers before deciding on which beer is best for you.

Discovery Lake

If you want to play in the water, but don’t want to go to the beach, Discovery Lake is your best bet. It’s owned and run by the city of San Marcos, which performs upkeep and maintenance on the trails, playgrounds, and picnic areas.

On top of that, the lake is stocked with fish. The city recommends catch-and-release fishing with barbless hooks, and you can’t raft the lake. The trail around the lake is a great walk to take if you need to clear your mind, or just spend some time with that special person in your life.

The Antique Village

Last, but definitely not least, is The Antique Village. This mall is famous across the country for being home to one of the best collections of antiques and collectible items. They have a great selection of furniture, too.
