45 San Diego Residents Earn GED® Credential through College’s Good Neighbor Initiative
College’s Good Neighbor Initiative Helps Local Residents Earn Their High School Equivalent for Free
San Diego (April 22, 2013) —
The San Diego campus of California College San Diego celebrated the achievements of 17 San Diego residents last week. The residents earned their GED credential after going through the college’s free GED preparation classes offered through the Good Neighbor Initiative, which also covers testing fees for students.
Since January, a total of 45 residents have earned their GED credential through the Good Neighbor Initiative, a service that offers free classes, workshops and training to help community members increase their employment and educational opportunities. Over the past year, more than 370 San Diego residents have taken advantage of the program.
“California College San Diego is dedicated to helping our community members overcome obstacles that prevent them from achieving their employment potential,” said Betty Navarette, Director of Career Services at California College San Diego. “These outstanding individuals deserve to be recognized for their hard work and achievements.”
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, individuals who have a GED or high school diploma earn nearly $9,000 more per year and are less likely to be unemployed than those who do not have a high school degree. More than 13 percent of San Diego residents, aged 25 or older, have not earned a high school diploma.
